GUIDANCE AND SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS MOVING INTO POSTSECONDARY

Providing guidance for students transitioning into postsecondary education is critical to prevent them from losing momentum. Evidence-based strategies include offering personalized information about scholarships, institutional discounts, and admissions processes, which can influence students to attend more selective institutions with higher graduation rates. Schools can also strengthen student outcomes by partnering with employers and postsecondary institutions to provide advanced career and technical education (CTE) programs, which enhance workforce readiness. Additionally, extended support from counselors is vital, as these professionals play a crucial role in helping students—particularly those from marginalized communities—navigate course selection, financial aid, and college applications.

The EdResearch for Action Overview Series summarizes the research on key topics to provide K-12 education decision makers and advocates with an evidence base to ground discussions about how to best serve students. Authors – leading experts from across the field of education research – are charged with highlighting key findings from research that provide concrete, strategic insight on persistent challenges sourced from district and state leaders.
